April 27 — member Social at Papa Passero's
You will find our meetings to be very interesting and informative. I expect that you will make the effort to be there.
Please be sure you visit our Web site, www.gcacoa.com, which has been recently redesigned. All Girls Catholic Athletic Conference school information is listed at the “Schools” tab, including school address and athletic director contact info. When “GCACOA Updates” are issued, you’ll find those by clicking on the tab with the same name. Be sure to check it out.
The calendar says the high school girls basketball season is now over. But it’s not over until we say it is as there’s plenty more to talk about before we officially call it a year.
Nearly one-half of the officials who were chosen this year to work the Illinois High School Association Class 3A-4A State Finals in Bloomington-Normal came from the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference Officials Association. Five GCACOA members, in fact, earned their first, second or third trips, respectively, to Illinois State University’s Redbird Arena. For the GCACOA, that’s the most ever at one tournament.
Congratulations are in order for Rick Cogswell (27th year), Ron Lorenzo (38th year), Don Taylor (22nd year), Ron Ritter (26th year) and Ken Pink (21st year). For Cogswell, Lorenzo and Taylor, this marked their third — and presumably final — invites, although you never say never. Cogswell and Lorenzo capped their tournaments with respective championship games on the Class 4A and 3A levels. For Ritter, this was his second trip downstate and he was rewarded with his first title game in 3A. Pink enjoyed his first state finals experience.
It’s a wonderful accomplishment that they should be extremely proud of. Since the IHSA started a state series for girls basketball in 1977, only 284 men and women have worked the finals. Of those 284, 42 have ties to the GCACOA. That’s almost 15 percent. Also of note, Cogswell’s title game appearance marked his last as a basketball referee. Shortly after the 2017 tournament concluded, Cogswell formally announced his retirement from the profession. Certainly the game ball that he and other championship game officials receive will serve as a nice reminder of all that has been accomplished. Please join the GCACOA Committee in congratulating him and all of the state finals referees on a job well-done!
The GCACOA’s seventh annual season-ending pizza party is set for Thursday, April 27, from 7-10 p.m. at Papa Passero’s Restaurant, 6326 S. Cass Ave., Westmont, IL 60559 (630/963-7660). This is for members only. It’s a way of saying thanks for all the hard work and time put in during season. All members who attended at least two of the three GCACOA meetings in October-November are eligible for this FREE event.
